Kym Lardner!

Wow! What an exciting morning with the fantastic author and illustrator- Kym Lardner. He is very creative and did some amazing drawings and songs. He told stories using just his lips- he had them all in his head, he didn’t use any books. He was so imaginative and funny!!!

Rex says: ‘he was SO imaginative.
Max Z says: ‘he was SO funny!!!’
Sam R says: ‘he sometimes likes to have a joke around’.
Eloise says: ‘very funny’
Evie says: ‘he was even funnier than Max Z’
Sam S says: ‘he was very funny and imaginative.
Milla says: ‘his stories have a good message, and he uses great descriptive words, he makes kids happy with them.
Magdalena says: ‘super, super funny’
Mahalia says: ‘he’s very entertaining!’
Jonathan says: ‘everyone forgot about me being funny! I do think he was quite a good story teller, but not as good as me or my mum’.

Kym was truly inspirational to us. We can’t wait to continue our unit on narrative!

Shapes, shapes and more shapes!

Today, we continued learning about shapes. We focused especially on 3D shapes. We are learning all about their properties. Did you know that a cube has 6 faces, 12 edges and 8 vertices’? We do! We explored many different shapes today’s including rectangular prisms and square based pyramids. We made all these different shapes with play dough and ice pole sticks. We then had to draw and describe our shapes- how many faces, edges and vertices’ did it have?

It was great fun and we learnt SO much!

Here are some pictures from our lesson today:

Ted E’s adventures with Mayan

Dear 1/2C,

I had a lovely time with Mayan and learnt some new things. For example, I asked him what a dozen and Mayan told me it means twelve.

1) Mayan’s stepmum, Emily, took a photo of me and Mayan sleeping.

2) Emily took me to the state library.

3) Mayan gave me some of his pasta for dinner.

4) we read the book The Silver Chair from the Narnia series.

5) here I am on the tram going to school with Mayan we are ‘touching on’ with Mayan’s Myki card.

Can we persuade you?

We are focusing on ‘persuasive writing’ during our writing sessions at the moment. We are learning all about how to be the BEST at arguing. Some of us are pretty good at it already, so we are just perfecting our skills! We are learning to use EMOTIVE language to persuade our readers. EMOTIVE words are words that make our readers feel EMOTIONAL in some way. Words like:

Angry
Dreadful
Horrible
Sad
Disgusted
Happy
Exciting

To name just a few that we have began using in our work. Today we decided that it was unfair that students had to wear uniform to school, when teachers don’t. We started with an overview, then we gave at least 3 reasons and finished with a conclusion. We think our readers will be convinced because we used such strong emotional words, and the correct structure.

Here are some other examples we have been working on. These are our first drafts!

EWWWW!

Do you know all the different ways we can make the ‘ew’ or ‘oo’ sound? We do! Today we did a brainstorm and found out that there are actually many different ways to make the ‘oo’ sound. We need to use visual cues to work out if the word ‘looks’ right. Take a work like ‘chewed’ for example we could spell it like this: ‘chood’ and technically it has the right sounds, but we know it doesn’t look quite right! This is why we use visual strategies to help us. We always ask ‘does this look right?’

Here are some of the words we brainstormed today:

Chewed

Rude

Screw

Luke

Nude

Suit

Food

hoop

root

route

soup

Can you think of any more?? Please comment 🙂

WE ARE SCIENTISTS!! The science of sound…..

Today we learnt about sound and how it travels. We all now know that sound travels by vibrations. We discovered that if we let the sound travel straight to our ears, it will be louder. We created connections from where the sound is made to our ears. One of the ways we did this was through using string. We tied string to a coat hanger then cupped the string over our ears and tapped the hanger. The difference was amazing. You should try it at home! Some of us thought that the sound reminded us of church bells and some of us were reminded of drums.
We are all looking forward to learning a lot more about the science of sound!
